Germination Ecology of Lathyrus aphaca, a Problematic Weed of Wheat Crop under Semi-Arid Conditions of Pakistan Planta Daninha
AAMIR,M.; KHAN,E.A.; BALOCH,M.S.; ASLAM,M..
ABSTRACT: Lathyrus aphaca is an aggressive dicotyledonous weed. The effect of different agroecological components/factors on the germination ecology of this weed was explored under a glasshouse and laboratory condition in 2014. The germination response of L. aphaca was lower at high temperature while maximum seed germination was found at 15/12 oC (day/night). Light significantly stimulated L. aphaca germination; nevertheless, substantial germination occurred under dark conditions. More than 86-90% of L. aphaca seeds germinated at pH level of 6.2-7.5. A significant quantity of seed germinated at 250 mM NaCl. There was no germination at -1 MPa. When the temperature was lower than 20/15 oC (day/night) initiation time of germination and germination index (GI)...

Toxin and Growth Responses of the Neurotoxic Dinoflagellate Vulcanodinium rugosum to Varying Temperature and Salinity ArchiMer
Abadie, Eric; Muguet, Alexia; Berteaux, Tom; Chomerat, Nicolas; Hess, Philipp; Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Masseret, Estelle; Laabir, Mohamed.
Vulcanodinium rugosum, a recently described species, produces pinnatoxins. The IFR-VRU-01 strain, isolated from a French Mediterranean lagoon in 2010 and identified as the causative dinoflagellate contaminating mussels in the Ingril Lagoon (French Mediterranean) with pinnatoxin-G, was grown in an enriched natural seawater medium. We tested the effect of temperature and salinity on growth, pinnatoxin-G production and chlorophyll a levels of this dinoflagellate. These factors were tested in combinations of five temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C) and five salinities (20, 25, 30, 35 and 40) at an irradiance of 100 µmol photon m−2 s−1. V. rugosum can grow at temperatures and salinities ranging from 20 °C to 30 °C and 20 to 40, respectively. The optimal...

Effect of temperature changes on the cercarial-shedding rate of two trematodes Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Achiorno,Cecilia L.; Martorelli,Sergio R..
ABSTRACT Since temperature is a key condition in the initiation of cercarial emergence, the objective of the work reported here was to evaluate the effect of that variable on the shedding of two morphologic and taxonomic types of cercariae. Bioassays were accordingly performed with snails naturally infected with either monostome or pleurolophocercous cercariae because those two cercarial types were found to be the most prevalent in the environment under study. The snails were placed in 6-ml circular plastic dishes with soft plastic stoppers containing 3 ml of reconstituted water and then sequentially exposed for 24 h to a 14:10-h light:dark cycle at 20, 25, or 30 °C. The data were analyzed at a significance level of p <0.05 by means of the InfoStat...

Germination test of Eucalyptus phaeotricha seeds AGRIAMBI
Affonso,Carlos E.; Silva,Givanildo Z. da; Jeromini,Tatiane S.; Martins,Cibele C..
ABSTRACT The rules for seed analysis do not have recommendations for conducting the germination test of Eucalyptus phaeotricha seeds. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the best substrate, temperature, conduction time, and substrate moistening level for the germination test of E. phaeotricha seeds. First count of germination, germination, germination speed index and mean time of germination were evaluated. The first experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, in a factorial scheme (6 x 2), corresponding to six temperature regimes (15, 20, 25, 30, 35 °C and 20-30 °C) and two substrates (paper and sand) with four replicates, and the means were compared by Tukey test at 0.05 probability level. In the second experiment, the...

Effects of temperature and salinity on the survival rates of coxicerberus ramosae (Albuquerque, 1978), an interstitial isopod of a Sandy Beach on the coast of Brazil BABT
Albuquerque,Elaine Figueiredo; Meurer,Bruno; Netto,Godofredo da Camara Genofre.
The tolerance to the combined effects of temperature and salinity was investigated in the interstitial isopod Coxicerberus ramosae (Albuquerque, 1978), a species of intertidal zone of sandy beaches in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The animals were collected on Praia Vermelha Beach. The experiments lasted 24 h and nine salinities and seven temperatures were used for a total of 63 combinations. Thirty animals were tested in each combination. The species showed high survival in most of the combinations. The temperature of 35 ºC was lethal and at 5 ºC, the animals tolerated only a narrow range of salinities. The statistical analyses showed that the effects of temperature and salinity were significant on the survival, which confirmed the euryhalinity and eurythermy...

Effects of fruiting on the growth of Arabica coffee trees as related to carbohydrate and nitrogen status and to nitrate reductase activity Rev. Bras. Fisiol. Veg.
AMARAL,JOSÉ A.T.; DA MATTA,FÁBIO M.; RENA,ALEMAR B..
Active vegetative and reproductive growth in field-grown trees of Coffea arabica L. in Viçosa (20º45’S, 650 m altitude), south-eastern Brazil, occur concurrently. The overall patterns of branch growth and leaf area gain were to a certain extent altered by fruit removal, with growth rates being remarkably greater in de-fruited trees. The content of N-NO3 was not affected by fruiting, whilst that of amino-N was greater in de-fruited than fruiting trees most of the time, but the differences were not large enough to have significantly contributed to the increased growth rates in de-fruited trees. Leaf nitrate reductase activity was greater in plants bearing fruit than in non-bearing ones most of the time; activity was roughly inversely associated with growth....

Development of a hot water treatment plant suitable for banana CIGR Journal
Amin, Mohammad Nurul; Hossain, Md. Mosharraf.
Banana is a year round fruit in Bangladesh. After harvesting, banana is attacked by postharvest disease caused by some fungi. The quality and quantity losses of banana occur due to disease attacks and lack of proper postharvest handling. Fungus can be destroyed or made inactive by chemical or heat treatment. Most of the chemicals are hazardous to human health. Heat treatment technology is simple and is a non-chemical method to kill or inactivate pest and to control fungus. A hot water treatment plant was designed and developed with local materials for treating banana fruits. Overall dimensions of the hot water treatment plant were 1600 mm×926 mm×1566 mm and operated by an electrical motor of 0.38 kW. Water was heated by the six electric immersion...

Chromosomal inversion polymorphism in Drosophila mediopunctata: seasonal, altitudinal, and latitudinal variation Genet. Mol. Biol.
Ananina,Galina; Peixoto,Alexandre A.; Bitner-Mathé,Blanche C.; Souza,Wilma N.; Silva,Luciano Basso da; Valente,Vera L.S.; Klaczko,Louis B..
The most polymorphic chromosome for inversions in Drosophila mediopunctata is the chromosome II, where 17 inversions have been found, eight of which occurring in the distal region and nine in the proximal region. We present an analysis of the chromosome II inversion polymorphism with respect to seasonal, altitudinal and latitudinal variation. In D. mediopunctata from the Parque Nacional do Itatiaia (southeastern Brazil), the frequencies of three of the distal inversions (namely DA, DS, and DP) vary seasonally. These inversions also show altitudinal clines in their frequencies. This microgeographic pattern was not observed on a macrogeographic scale. D. mediopunctata from Porto Alegre are less polymorphic for inversions than other populations, the most...

Soluble malate dehydrogenase of Geophagus brasiliensis (Cichlidae, Perciformes): isolated isoforms and kinetics properties Genet. Mol. Biol.
Aquino-Silva,Maria Regina de; Schwantes,Maria Luiza Barcellos; Munin,Flavia Simone; Schwantes,Arno Rudi; Santos,Silvana Pereira dos.
Kinetic properties and thermal stabilities of Geophagus brasiliensis skeletal muscle unfractionated malate dehydrogenase (MDH, EC 1.1.1.37) and its isolated isoforms were analyzed to examine a possible sMDH-B* locus duplication in a fixation process influenced by genetic drift. Two optimal pHs were detected: 7.5 for AB1 unfractionated muscle phenotype and its B1 isoform, and 8.0 for AB1B2 unfractionated muscle phenotype, A and B2 isoforms. While G. brasiliensis A isoform could be characterized as thermostable, the duplicated B isoform cannot be assumed as thermolabile. Km values for isolated B2 isoforms were 1.6 times lower than for B1. A duplication event in progress best explains the electrophoretic six-band pattern detected in G. brasiliensis, which...

Hydrothermal treatment favors peeling of 'Pera' sweet orange fruit and does not alter quality Scientia Agricola
Arruda,Maria Cecília de; Jacomino,Angelo Pedro; Pinheiro,Ana Luíza; Ribeiro,Rafael Vasconcelos; Lochoski,Michelle Antonio; Moreira,Raquel Capistrano.
Consumer demand for ready-to-eat-products has stimulated the development of new processing techniques to prepare fresh-cut fruit and vegetables. The aim of this study was to propose a peeling method for 'Pera' oranges (Citrus sinensis [L.] Osb.) by using a hydrothermal treatment and to determine its influence on the respiratory activity, physicochemical and sensorial characteristics, as well as on the peeling time. Cooled oranges (6ºC) were immersed in heated water (50ºC) for eight minutes and then, peeled and stored at 6ºC. The internal fruit temperatures taken at 1 and 3 cm depths (from fruit surface) were 15ºC and 10ºC, respectively, at the end of the hydrothermal treatment. Non-hydrothermally-treated peeled oranges were used as control. The peeling...

Flow cytometry to measure impact of temperature and salinity on the survival of Bonamia ostreae, parasite infecting flat oyster Ostrea edulis, in seawater ArchiMer
Arzul, Isabelle; Bond, Celine; Gagnaire, Beatrice; Morga, Benjamin; Chollet, Bruno; Ferrand, Sylvie; Robert, Maeva; Renault, Tristan.
Bonamiosis due to the intrahaemocytic protistan parasite Bonamia ostreae is a European endemic disease affecting the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis. After its first description in June 1979ı in Brittany, the parasite rapidly spread to all French oyster farming areas and in other European countries through transfers of live molluscs. The parasite has been described in different ecosystems from estuaries to open sea and no clear correlations could he demonstrated between the disease development and environmental parameters like temperature or salinity. The infection can he directly transmitted by cohabitation between infected and non infected oysters. Nevertheless, the parasite life cycle, including its survival outside the host, is not completely...
